American Fulbrighters Celebrate Thanksgiving

On November 21 Ambassador Cain welcomed Denmark's distinguished American Fulbright scholars and graduate students to the Embassy for a reception followed by a Thanksgiving Dinner in the Diplomat Restaurant.  Also attending the event were representatives of the Danish host institutions, the staff and members of the Board of Directors of the Danish-American Fulbright Commission, staff from the Embassy's Public Affairs Office, and spouses of the guests.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational program sponsored by the United States Government.  It was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late-Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas in order to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.  Since then more than 279,000 people, chosen for their leadership potential, have received Fulbright grants allowing them to observe each others' political, economic and cultural institutions, to exchange ideas, and to embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world's inhabitants.

The agreement creating the Fulbright Commission in Denmark was signed by the governments of the United States and Denmark in 1951 with several later amendments. Today the work of the Commission is to provide Fulbright grants to Danish and American graduate students and scholars. The Danish-American Fulbright Commission is an independent entity with its own Board consisting of 4 Americans and 4 Danes. Its work is carried out in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Denmark and the Government of Denmark.  For more information about the Commission’s work, see: www.wemakeithappen.dk
