Ambassador
Ambassador Cain's Remarks on Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's Visit
Frederiksberg Fire Station
October 2, 2005
Three-hundred and forty-three firefighters died in New York City on September 11. We will never forget the sacrifice that they and their fellow heroes made in the towers of New York City, the fields of Pennsylvania and the concrete buildings of Washington, DC. These heroes are joined by others who symbolize our fight against terror, including those who are making the supreme sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Today we are together to celebrate the spirit of compassion and courage that links these events. In Denmark, we celebrate the spontaneity and compassion of the firefighters and other first-responders who came together after 9/11 and raised more than 800,000 kroner to support their fellow firefighters in New York City. We also deeply appreciate the efforts of the band "Firefighters," whose members together raised more than 53,000 kroner for New York firefighters.
Beyond those of you here today, there were thousands of others in this country who through their own private efforts and prayers responded in an outpouring of compassion and support following September 11.
Thank you for joining in the fight for freedom, the struggle against terror, and for your demonstration of brotherhood with fellow firefighters and those who love freedom around the globe.
