U.S. Senators Visit Greenland to See Effects of Climate Change

Ilulissat/Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Ten members of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works, led by Committee Chair Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), visited Greenland July 27-29 to view firsthand the effects of climate change on the Arctic environment, in preparation for upcoming deliberations on new legislation to address global warming. Accompanied throughout by Danish Environment Minister Connie Hedegaard, Embassy Copenhagen Political/Economic Counselor Bill Mozdzierz and leading Danish and U.S. polar specialists, the Senate delegation toured the Jakobshavn ice fjord near Ilulissat and reviewed the impact of climate change with Greenland Home Rule Minister of Health and Environment Arkalo Abelsen. Members of the delegation were Chairman Boxer, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD), Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN).
