NBA and WNBA Stars Team up with GAM3 for Sports Diplomacy on the Streets of Nørrebro

Nørrebro, Copenhagen
June 30, 2006

National Basketball Association (NBA) legend George Gervin, NBA Atlanta Hawks Guard-Forward Josh Childress and Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Carla McGhee took their games to Nørrebro Hallen on June 30 for a workout with about 75 young people from the neighborhood participating in GAM3's weekly three-on-three competition.

George Gervin -- the third highest scorer in NBA history behind only Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan -- put on a shooting clinic while Josh Childress and Carla McGhee joined opposing teams in a three-on-three game. McGhee's team won in a no-holds-barred game that saw more than a few blocked shots and dunks. Everyone went home happy after group photos and an autograph signing session that saw the players sign jerseys, balls and GAM3 scorecards.

The event is part of the U.S. Embassy's on-going cooperation with GAM3, an NGO using sports to reach out to young people in immigrant communities. NBA and WNBA stars Francisco Elson and Andrea Stinson will participate in Street GAM3 openings in Vollsmose, Gellerup and Mjølnerparken on July 3, 4 and 5 respectively. The Houston hip-hop group HaviKoro will participate in GAM3's August 5 finals in Copenhagen's Town Hall Square.
