Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat
August 23-24, 2006
Enhancing our dialogue with Denmark on climate change, a United States Senate delegation led by Senator John McCain (Republican, Arizona), traveled to Greenland August 23 and 24 to meet with Greenlandic and Danish officials and to engage with climate change experts. The Senate Delegation was hosted by Greenland Home Rule Deputy Premier Josef Motzfeldt, Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs Per Stig Møller, and Danish Minister for the Environment Connie Hedegaard. While in Greenland the Senators visited Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat, where they traveled by boat to view the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The delegation was also surveyed from the air the Ilulissat Glacier, one of Greenland's most active, and were able to see firsthand developments in the Arctic environment there.
In addition to Senator McCain and Mrs. Cindy McCain, the other members of the U.S. Senate Delegation included Senator Saxby Chambliss (Republican, Georgia) and Mrs. Julianne Chambliss, Senator Mel Martinez (Republican, Florida) and Mrs. Kitty Martinez, Senator Lindsey Graham (Republican, South Carolina), and Mrs. Brooke Burr, the wife of Senator Richard Burr (Republican, North Carolina).
