U.S. Destroyer Hosts Danish Community

Aarhus
July 3-4, 2006

The USS THE SULLIVANS hosted two separate events that took place on July 3 and 4. On July 3, as a curtain raiser to the Independence Day program at the Rebild Hills, north of Aalborg, the U.S. Navy, The Rebild Society and the US Embassy invited as many as 150 guests to a reception that took place on the deck of the US destroyer. U.S. Ambassador Cain, Bishop of Aarhus, Kjeld Holm, the Chairman of Region Mid-Jutland and Aarhus Chief of Police, Jørgen Ilum were among the participants at the event.

On July 4, U.S. Ambassador James P. Cain met with young people from the Bispehaven and Gellerup regions of Aarhus. Following a guided tour of the ship, the Embassy's Public Affairs Section discussed, among other things, democracy building, American values and the war on terror with the group.

THE SULLIVANS (DDG-68) is named to honor five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa who served together on the USS JUNEAU during World War II. The Sullivan brothers: George, 28; Francis, 27; Joseph, 24; Madison, 23; and Albert, 20; lost their lives during the Battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942.
