U.S. Embassy Copenhagen and GAM3 Street Basketball Team up to Promote Integration through Sports
Denmark
June 4 - 7, 2007
The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen teamed up with the Danish street basketball NGO GAM3 to bring Jamal Sampson of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Denver Nuggets and Andrea Stinson of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Charlotte Sting to Denmark June 4-7 to participate in street basketball clinics in Copenhagen (Mjølnerparken), Odense (Vollsmose) and Aarhus (city center and Gellerup Park). U.S. Ambassador to Denmark James P. Cain opened the series of street basketball clinics with a three-on-three game in which he joined Deputy Copenhagen Mayor Jakob Hougaard and Mjølnerparken Residents Association Chairman Muhammed Aslam to take on a team of young people from the neighborhood. They later tried their luck against the NBA and WNBA pros. In addition to the pro players, the Embassy brought Isaac Barron and Rosie Bichon from the Houston hip-hop crew "Havikoro" to run workshops in GAM3's dance program. GAM3 -- which is the only international partner other than UNICEF in the NBA's "Community Cares" community outreach initiative -- seeks to draw young people from Denmark's immigrant neighborhoods into the Danish club sports system
