United Hearts Winter Gala Fundraiser

The United Hearts Fonden held its first charitable event in Copenhagen on February 2, 2008. The purpose of the black-tie Gala was to raise funds for “Sports for Life”, an organization that will host a series of multi-sports summer camps for young people from ethnic and non-ethnic communities in Denmark. The Gala raised around four million Kroner or about 800.000 US$
The Winter Gala was attended U.S. Ambassador James P. Cain and Flemming Østergaard, President and Chairman of PARKEN Sport & Entertainment A/S. The program for the Winter Gala will include live auctions and performances by some of Denmark’s best known artists. Hosts at the evening were Jarl Friis Mikkelsen and Casper Christensen.
Approximately 40 Danish and American companies have bought a table for the Gala, and individuals will also be invited to purchase tickets for the event.

The Foundation

Many people have expressed great enthusiasm for the idea of combining the Danish tradition of social compassion with the American tradition of private philanthropy. The United Hearts Fonden has been established to support this idea and to support projects that respond to the evolving challenges and opportunities facing Danish society.

In its inaugural year, the UHF will raise funds to address one of the preeminent challenges of our time: the social integration of the young generation of Denmark's ethnic immigrants. The funds raised will be used to support "Sports for Life", a network of summer sports camps that seeks to nurture leadership and social engagement among young people from Denmark's multiethnic and non-ethnic communities.

Sports for Life

The United Hearts Fonden has selected “Sports for Life” as the beneficiary of the 2008 Winter Gala. “Sports for Life” seeks to nurture leadership and social engagement among young people from Denmark's multiethnic and non-ethnic neighborhoods through a week-long overnight summer academy experience.

Selected young people , both “new Danes” and “ethnic Danes”, who attend the Academy will receive leadership and life skills training, within the context of team sports. This camp is a first of its kind in Denmark, and will combine the universal attraction of sports with lessons in education and leadership.
The goal of the Academy is not to create stronger athletes, but to create stronger citizens.

The 2008 Sports Camp will be held in Slagelse. Dates to be determined. Check out the video explaining the sports camps and the ideas behind them.
