Ambassador Cain and Minister of Social Affairs Eva Kjer Hansen Sign Social Security Agreement
Copenhagen, Denmark
June 13, 2007
Ambassador James Cain and Minister of Social Affairs Eva Kjer Hansen signed a treaty eliminating the requirement that citizens and employers make duplicate retirement contributions while temporarily working in the other country. The agreement means that 1400 Danish and American workers will be relieved of paying both U.S. Social Security and Danish retirement taxes during temporary assignments in the other country. At the signing ceremony -- which was hosted by Danish defense contractor Terma -- Ambassador Cain said: "This agreement symbolizes the special bond of friendship between the United States and Denmark and our strong commitment to improving retirement protection for our citizens...The trade in goods and services between our nations would not be possible without the free movement of American and Danish executives, technicians, and skilled workers from one country to the other."
