Important Tax Information -- IRS & U.S. Taxes

U.S. citizens, even those residing abroad, must file a federal tax return and report their worldwide income. Each year, usually by early March, the Embassy receives a selection of federal (not state) tax forms and information booklets. You may pick up forms during our operating hours or send us a self-addressed stamped envelope to order forms by number and name.

We regret that an IRS tax expert/trainer will not be visiting Embassy Copenhagen in 2006. Therefore there will be no volunteer tax assistance program this year.

The regional IRS office with jurisdiction over Denmark is based at the American Embassy in London, England.Tax assistance via the telephone is available from IRS London (+44) 20-7894-0476 and from the IRS Philadelphia Service Center: (+1) 215-516-2000

Tax Treaty

A new U.S.-Denmark income tax treaty entered into force March 31, 2000.

This treaty replaces the old one signed between the two countries in 1948.

Denmark notified the United States March 31 that it had complied with all constitutional requirements for entry into force of the treaty, and the United States had previously provided reciprocal notification to Denmark.

For taxes withheld at source, the treaty applies to amounts paid or credited on or after May 1, 2000; for all other taxes, the treaty applies to tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2001.
