Ambassador Cain talks about Trafficking in persons with DR

Copenhagen, Denmark
June 15, 2007

Ambassador Cain talked about the State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons Report with DR TV in an interview that aired on the June 15 evening news. The report, which was issued on June 12, listed Denmark in the "Tier 1" category of countries that continue to do a creditable job in enforcement, protection of victims, and prevention of trafficking. The report did identify some areas in which the government can improve its record even further. For example, we encouraged the Danish government to consider granting trafficking victims temporary residency and work permits to increase victim participation in trafficking investigations, and look for legal alternatives to deportation for victims who face hardship or even retribution should they be deported. Ambassador Cain noted that: "When you ask victims to step forward they are taking a risk of retribution and revenge, and governments need to ensure that victims are not abused a second time".
